Introduction:

Beginning notes by Bonnie Dalzell, MA (hopefully others will add to and modify these) It is hoped that this wiki can become a central resource for the posting of articles on the science and art of breeding healthy and vigorous dogs. In the last 40 years the science of genetics has been greatly transformed by our increased knowledge of DNAa, population genetics and the genetics of the immune system. In general this information has not made it to the average dog breeder while older models of breeding have persisted. As the public's attitude towards pets has increasingly humanized it is apparant that breeders have a great burden since they are now breeding animals that will become beloved family members and there is an obligation to produce healthy and long lived pets to fulful this public need in addition to preserving the functionality that was the reason for the creation of dog breeds.
